(Text&Photos:Mei Pengfei)On the morning of August 7, local time in Brazil, Zhengzhou Advanced Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology(ZARI of HIT) and SÃO PAULO STATE UNIVERSITY “JÚLIO DE MESQUITA FILHO” (UNESP), BRAZILofficially signed a cooperation agreement. Mr. Zhang Hong, Member of the Institute Council, and Prof. Cesar Martins, Vice President of UNESP, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

According to the Agreement, the two sides will establish a multi-tiered, regularized international science and education cooperation system, collaborating in areas such as researcher and student exchanges, joint research projects, academic activities, and technology cooperation and transfer, to promote complementary strengths and coordinated development, and produce high-level research outcomes.

The signing of this Cooperation Agreement comes at a time when China-Brazil educational cooperation is deepening and economic and trade exchanges between Zhengzhou and São Paulo are growing. It also represents an important extension and practical implementation of the existing cooperation between HIT and UNESP. The partnership will open two-way exchange channels for faculty and students, cultivate internationally oriented interdisciplinary research talents, integrate scientific research resources from both countries for joint innovation and technology commercialization, and enrich the exchange framework between Chinese and Brazilian universities.It will also continuously enhance mutual trust between researchers of the two countries, promote mutual learning among civilizations through academic exchanges, serve the Belt and Road science and education cooperation initiative, help build Zhengzhou into a window for international technological innovation, and contribute to Henan Province's efforts to build a high-level opening-up innovation ecosystem.

Founded in 1976, SÃO PAULO STATE UNIVERSITY “JÚLIO DE MESQUITA FILHO” (UNESP) is a top public research university in Latin America, with disciplines such as engineering, materials, biomedicine, and agriculture consistently ranking among the best in Brazil. Together with HIT, UNESP serves as the International Coordinating University for the BRICS Network University for the 2025–2028 term and is a key hub for Brazil's higher education cooperation with BRICS countries.
In November 2025, HIT and UNESP signed a cooperation agreement to deepen collaboration in materials science, environmental engineering, health sciences, and other fields, through initiatives such as joint laboratories, joint talent cultivation, and educational and cultural exchanges, leveraging the intellectual resources and research strengths of both sides.
The China International College Students' Innovation Competition (2026) Brazil Regional Finals, held for the first time in Latin America this year, was hosted by the Ministry of Education and eleven other ministries and commissions, organized by HIT, and co-organized by ZARI of HIT and UNESP.
